Earthsafe
designed and built the fuel system for the Chicago internet
data center. The installation of 25,000 gallon of underground
storage served 12 generator sets. The installation included
coordination with other data center construction on a tight
construction site. A sheet pile shoring system and dewatering
system was required for the installation.
LEVEL
3 COMMUNICATIONS
Ameritech performed a region-wide upgrade of existing facilities
to remove underground fuel tanks in response to federal
regulations. Earthsafe provided fire rated aboveground fuel
systems with secondary containment and spill / overfill
protection. Earthsafe provided below grade fuel vaults at
sites where ASTs were not practical. Electronic fuel
level and leak detection monitor systems were installed
and connected to building monitor systems.
AMERITECH
Level 3 required emergency power for facilities as part
of their nationwide fiber network build-out. Earthsafe provided
fuel systems on a fast track basis for sites in Chicago,
Los Angeles, and St. Louis. The fire rated tank construction
was important for fast code approval from the local regulatory
authorities.
KMC TELCOM
KMC Telcom had an aggressive schedule to install switching
stations at Midwest and Southeast locations. Earthsafe designed
an aboveground fire rated tank system that was acceptable
to the State and local code authorities. The diesel fuel
system provided significant time and cost advantages to
natural gas powered generators. Earthsafe expedited delivery
of the systems by pre-installing fuel level / leak detection
monitors in pre-fabricated equipment enclosures.
FOCAL COMMUNICATIONS
Earthsafe provided aboveground secondary containment tanks
for installation within a fire rated room. The room was
constructed in the parking garage of a high rise building
in Atlanta. Space restrictions required that the tank be
remotely located from both the fill point and the generator
location. Fill pump systems with redundant overfill protection
were installed. The fuel supply to the generators was provided
through double wall welded steel pipe.
AT&T MICROWAVE SITES
AT&T performed a nationwide upgrade of existing facilities
to remove underground fuel tanks in response to federal
regulations. Earthsafe provided fire rated aboveground fuel
systems with secondary containment and spill / overfill
protection. Electronic fuel level and leak detection monitor
systems were installed and connected to building monitor
systems. Systems in cold climates included tank and pipe
heating systems.
TELIGENT
Earthsafe provided a 4000 gallon fire rated fuel tank to
be installed in the basement of a high rise building in
Chicago. The system included equipment for the remote filling
of the fuel tank with spill and overfill protection. Electronic
fuel level and leak detection monitor systems were installed.
MCI WORLDCOM
Earthsafe provided fire rated aboveground fuel tanks for
locations in Chicago, Miami, and Orlando. The systems included
equipment for spill and overfill protection. Electronic
fuel level and leak detection monitor systems were installed.
The Florida sites required special restraints for protection
of the fuel system in hurricane conditions.
WILLIAMS COMMUNICATIONS
Earthsafe provided a fire rated aboveground tank system
to meet local regulatory requirements. The fuel system feeds
multiple generator units through a redundant fuel pump system
with controls. . The systems included equipment for spill
and overfill protection. Electronic fuel level and leak
detection monitor systems were installed.
Earthsafe
provided fuel systems for an internet service facility in
Santa Clara, CA. The site required multiple fuel tanks feeding
multiple generators. Earthsafe provided pump systems and
controls to control the tank manifolding system and distribution
to the generators.
Earthsafe
has provided a fuel system in high rise building in Atlanta.
The site required installation of fire rated fuel tanks
inside the buildings. The Atlanta site power generators
were located on the building roof. The system required piping
to be installed on the exterior of the 10 story building,
and high pressure pumps for fuel delivery. The systems included
special fill devices for remote fuel deliveries. The fill
pipe is installed within a secure spill container, and includes
an overfill prevention valve at the tank. Electronic fuel
level and leak detection monitor systems were installed
and activate a high level signal at the fill point for redundant
overfill protection.
Earthsafe
designed and built the underground fuel system for emergency
generator service on a fast track basis in compliance with
state and local code requirements.
The
hyper-growth of the Internet facility provider required
fast track construction of new facilities at multiple Nationwide
locations. Earthsafe provided technical services and specialized
equipment for facilities at Silicon Valley (4 sites), Los
Angeles (2 sites), Austin (2 sites), Dallas, Chicago, Toronto,
and Miami. The sites include both underground and aboveground
tank systems ranging in capacity from 50,000 to 160,000
gallons and servicing from 6 to 24 generator sets. The work
included obtaining permits and meeting local fire code requirements
at each individual site.
Earthsafe
is providing the design and construction of emergency power
fuel systems for Worldcom at 12 internet service facilities
nationwide. The sites include Houston, Dallas, Atlanta,
Washington DC, Miami, New York, Boston, St. Louis, Denver,
Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Seattle. The fast track
project schedule requires close coordination with multiple
project teams. The sites require 20,000 to 50,000 gallons
of fuel storage to meet operating requirements. Earthsafe
is providing aboveground fuel tanks from 6 manufacturing
facilities to meet the aggressive schedule. Our ability
to work with local code officials to obtain permits has
been a critical aspect of the project execution. The fuel
system includes a filtration system to assure the quality
of the fuel during long-term storage.
The
internet facility provider has an aggressive schedule to
build over 20 facilities worldwide. Earthsafe provided specialized
equipment and technical services for facilities in Silicon
Valley, Texas, Chicago, and New York. Systems include both
underground and aboveground storage systems designed to
a N+1 standard of redundancy. The fuel systems are provided
with network interface to provide real time data to the
building management system.
The Chicago facility construction required installation
of an engineered dewatering system and the handling of abandoned
underground fuel tanks and contaminated soils. These legacy
environmental issues were resolved without delay to the
overall project schedule.
The
development of a large urban multistory warehouse to internet
use required extensive negotiation with building code officials.
The facility required storage of 100,000 gallons of fuel
in specially designed tanks and rooms in the basement of
the building. The fuel system was designed to provide service
to 25 generators located on the 6-story building roof. The
system was designed as a re-circulating header system to
provide continuous and reliable service to all of the building
tenants.
The
largest internet / telecom hotel in the world was developed
to provide telecom companies with fast access to the marketplace.
The million square foot building was converted from its
original use as a printing plant. The conversion required
extensive negotiations with local building code officials.
The fuel storage for generators was an important part of
the building plan.
Earthsafe
designed and built fuel systems for all of the major building
tenants including Equinix, Global Center, Qwest, Verio,
360 Networks, and Global Crossing. Systems in total included
100,000 gallons of fuel storage serving 30 generator sets.
Installation required the use of engineered shoring and
dewatering systems, and the handling of contaminated soils.
